Construyendo Cultura
My piece is supposed to represent a number of values. At first I was just aiming for the value of diversity but it also expresses my value of creativity and community. I essentially created a woman out of many other different woman to create one person, showing we’re all the same, human, but also exhibit our differences. I value diversity a lot because I love to see people being themselves and everyone is so different in their own beautiful way, but everyone still gets along. That’s why I like High Tech so much, because everyone has their own style and way of expression, yet altogether we are one big community who loves each other. Community is important to me because in order to feel loved you need the friendliness to and from others to come together. The photos of the woman are all different but can all come together as one. I value High Tech’s unapologetic weird community and it’s little communities within each class. I also thought this piece was creative and a little out of the box. Knowing me my easy way out would to just draw something and call it a day but I decided to do something different and challenge myself to see how it goes.
My project went smoothly, I was lucky that had enough substance to work with in the little magazines I had, and I liked how quickly I could construct the woman. I also think the size was really manageable but also appealing, plus the finished product I’m really proud of. I think I used my time really well and was able to complete it in a timely manner.
It was difficult making the background just because it was so time consuming and difficult to put the most fitting and appropriate article to fit. I also had trouble cutting out the right size pieces to fit the face and I would often cut them too small and have to throw away a really good piece I could have used. Plus, to top it off, I tried to coat the entire thing with watered down mod podge because I only had a little left but the water ended up wrinkling the magazines a lot and made the texture a bit unattractive but at least it now physically feels like one smooth piece.
I think the most significant part was understanding my values, because at first I was just going for diversity since I thought it would go best with the visual but then I realized it could be a way to show my value of being creative and being a part of a community. If I could do anything differently I would definitely get more magazines, that way I would have had more to choose from ultimately giving me a better product and even more diversity.
I’ve definitely grown in being able to recognize the roots of verbs and getting the gist of sentences, I also am able to read words faster, maybe not understand them as fast but comprehend and pronounce way faster.

La Comida Favorita
My favorite food is ramen because it’s not one set flavor or style, there are so many things to add to it to your liking and it’s really customisable. I remember for my birthday last year I went up to LA with some friends and we had lunch in central market which has a ton of little restaurants in it, and me and Cooper really wanted to try this PB&J place but it ended up being awful but Julian decided to get ramen and I ended up eating his because it was so much better. Every place is different and every style of ramen is so unique but I have never had a bad bowl in my life. Ramen is a Japanese food, but it’s believed that it was imported from china between the 17th and 20th century. Miso ramen was born in Sapporo in the 1850s and considered a luxury. And the familiar instant noodle we love to snack on was invented in 1958. There are currently 19 different recognized styles of ramen, but the primary four being shio, shoyu, miso and tonkotsu.

Maestros creativos
My creative piece is a painting inspired by my favorite song by the Marías, called Déjate Llevar. I decided to paint because it’s the best way I know how to use my expression to convey feelings towards anything. I painted María in my own style, surrounded by the things I associate with her music but more specifically the song. I used plexiglass because I wanted a challenge- painting on a non-porous surface, and to signify the clarity and crisp sound of her voice. The music video includes beautiful visuals which I tried to incorporate into my piece, such as palm trees, roses, and guitars. I wrote Déjate Llevar in cursive and in red because their logo is written in cursive and their theme color is red. María is very creatively inspired by “spanish-looking” things, so her favorite colors to integrate are hues of reds or golds. She was born in Puerto Rico and grew up surrounded by Spanish, especially listening to a lot of Latin music. That’s what inspired her use of her Spanish in her music. Her music video for Dejate Llevar was heavily inspired by the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar.
In this project I learned a lot about patience and problem solving. Because there were so many components in my drawing that were layered I had to break it down in the farthest thing in the background and go in that order to the closest thing in the foreground. It’s extremely difficult to keep track of so I ended up going over some places many times. I knew that would happen to me at one point so I made sure to hang onto every paint I mixed just in case I had to use it again. I’ve never done a painting like that before, and I don’t even prefer to use acrylic or non porous materials at all actually, and to sit down and get myself to work on this every day I could was a challenge. The Marías’s work inspires me to continue creating what I love. Their music also helped me appreciate the use of Spanish in songs I would actually listen to. Dejate Llevar is such a wonderful, blissful song that I almost know word for word now, and I’ll always resonate with it. I love anything they put out and will continue to support them and their creations, while also continuing my creations and following my inspirations.

Exhibition Reflection
A significant part of the exhibition was when a parent and a sibling I didn’t know came up to me, really interested in my work. They didn’t introduce themselves and I hadn’t seen them before so I thought it was nice that they were really excited to learn about my work. They complimented my painting a lot even though at that point I was so tired of looking at my own work that I didn’t like it anymore, so it was nice to hear it from someone else.
I liked demonstrating my Spanish to my mom who is fluent in German. Since I understand some, she would ask me in German and I would respond in Spanish. She asked me a lot about how to form a sentence, she was trying to ask me about my project in Spanish. I was really proud of my ability to form those sentences and use my knowledge to teach someone else.
Culturally I grew a lot from learning about what shaped my master and from the other presentations around me. Since I was stationed next to Conrad I heard about his master and what inspiration he brings to him, and how much he was able to take away from the impact his master made. I wish I had time to go and see everyone’s so I could learn more.

I think my product and mural pieces came out really nice. I managed my time so I could get them both to a satisfactory state and ready for exhibition which I’m very proud of. What I thought didn’t go so well was exhibition because there were hardly any people and it was pretty empty because I was in the 1st shift.
I don’t think I would change anything much. Maybe put my project on a piece of wood to make it look more finished, or write more for my spoken piece. Other than that I’m really proud of my work I produced in the time we had.
I think the most significant part of this project was learning more about the subjects that we were passionate about. Being able to create something to spread awareness is something really important, and our freedom to do whatever topic helped us really get to the changes we wanted to see. It’s good to get students passionate about subjects and our freedom to choose what we feel strongly about was a great way to motivate our best work.
I’ve grown and learned a lot in Spanish this year and every project helps me learn more and more. This project I learned a lot culturally about Mexican muralism and the true roots of street art. Our discussion about immigration and border disputes was also extremely interesting and really showed two sides of a story.
