Storm Water Pollution Protection Plan

High traffic drain
High traffic drain
Our groups' objective in this project is to monitor storm water population in our local drains. Us specifically are looking for TSS levels and Nitrites & Nitrates in our water. TSS stands for total suspended solids, so in other words, things that can contaminate the water's clarity like dirt, leaves, sticks, and other debris from around the drain. Nitrites and Nitrates can be harmful because they're naturally occurring and can take out all of the oxygen from the water so when it travels to a lake where fish or other animals live, it's inhabitable. We hope to keep these contaminants out of our drains and find a way to make it actually drain properly because puddling and overflowing was a problem at our drain. With our clean runoff we can reuse it and filter it for drinking water or use for gardening.
An area in design for this project I'd be interested in is creating a BMP design for a drain, or creating PSA like advertisements for the cause. I think it would be fun to design and create a PSA to raise awareness, art is always fun and I think I'd be good at implementing my skills into it.
As far as my career choice, I am still very conflicted. I've been drawing my whole life and I enjoy art a lot but I don't think I could see myself perusing that effectively and liking it. I really really love music and dream to make my own and become a musician but It's something I've only recently started to take seriously and I don't consider myself good enough to make a career. I hope one day I'll find something that combines what I love equally that I can pursue.

SWPPP project project description- Andrea and I created an art piece out of clay and trash intertwining to create a coral reef sculpture. We hope to spread awareness about littering, pollution and it's effects on the ocean. By displaying our piece in our school we can reach students directly. We gathered trash from around the school and slowly pieced together our sculpture in combination with clay. Our final product was a clam out of a plastic box and coral and branches growing around the trash.

SWPPP, Poison and Toxin ads, Chemistry Talks
For all three projects I always did the best I could and put in equal effort to make my projects the best I could. For SWPPP I was always contributing my part, as well as fulfilling my higher position duties filling out the big official sampling sheet. Andrea and I worked tirelessly to accomplish our final project by gathering supplies and working during presentations, digging through bins for trash, staying in during lunch, we cared a lot about finishing on time and with a product we’re proud of, and I am! For the poisons and toxins mini project I was also paired with Andrea and we both split the load equally. I was very focused on our ad looking real and compelling. I was constantly asking for feedback and communicating with Andrea ideas to change. I’m really proud of our final ad and I think it reflects both of our artistic talents. The chem demo was the hardest project but I’m proud of the work I put in and my understanding of the chemistry we had to incorporate. I had to juggle this while working on my final SWPPP project so whenever I wasn’t doing that I was working on my presentation. I also took time on weekends to do extra tests and trials. Throughout every project I was constantly putting in the most effort to meet expectations and higher.
If I could re-do any project it would be the chem demo because I realized I didn’t put on my slides that I changed the amount of chemical I used so it looked like I only had two trials. I also wish I had more time to do more research on my experiment because SWPPP was still going on and needed attention too. As far as warm ups and general assignments I wish we had more time to review moles because that’s what I struggled with the most. The warm ups helped a lot, especially when more can be accessed for more practice.
Next year I want to continue to ask for practices and do warm ups on my own because it helps me learn a lot. The more practice I get the better and more comfortable I’ll be with the subject. That helped me a lot during chemistry and I think more repetition of what I don’t understand will eventually help me get it.
During these projects I surprised myself with how much information I could understand and I became good at chemistry. I’m really proud of how I was able to help others, which helped me learn more too.
I thought the format of this class was perfect! The warm ups were always applicable and helped us for what we were learning, Though I think the packets got a little heavy at times. I liked that we could work ahead and it helped me to not be stressed about the assignments because when I got them done I could move on at my own pace. I liked how if something was wrong we got feedback and the chance to go back as many times as we need to get it right. I’m very proud of my work in this class because of that, I know the content and have worked to understand it.
I found the greatest connection to my own life in chemistry in every project we did because I got to look deeper into the real structures and make up of my everyday life. From smells, to fire, reactions I didn’t even know were happening every day like cooking or making crafts. It was really interesting learning about reactions and seeing the actual work of what was happening and balancing my own reactions, knowing that this is what I am seeing in real life. Chemistry connects to everything so to make these connections and realize how it’s everywhere is essential.
Next year I hope SWPPP can progress where we left off and the students implement our BMPs or create their own to better the environment. I think they should start off with the same introduction we got, and then check up on the drains to see if our BMPS are working or not. I hope they get rain so they can get to collect samples and analyze their data and compare it to ours.
