Career day 2019
For career day I went to shadow at an advertising agency in La Jolla called Lambesis. They work with industries to either create or further their branding. I met with the executive of brand management and he introduced me to their creative team. Going in, the extent of my knowledge of this place was that they do branding and advertisements and their visuals were really compelling. I now know that they work with brands as big as McDonalds to little ones like Diamond Mattress. I saw how detail oriented each member of the creative team had to be. The editing executive showed me the video ads he was working on for Yes To, and someone working on making logos showed me photos from a shoot they did with McDonalds, along with every little edit they had made and were going to make.
They took me out for lunch which was incredibly kind of them, and during I used the time for an interview. I interviewed Brian, the executive of brand management, and Toby the executive of editing. Brian didn’t know what he wanted to be until college. He was into sports and considered that as a path, but was thinking psychology. He took an advertising class and creative writing that he enjoyed a lot. He realized he was always dissecting ads without knowing it, things like, why they chose that certain color or font. He realized it was tied into psychology a lot, and he enjoyed evaluating, rather than creating and taking feedback. To prepare for this job creative and business writing helped a lot. His advertising courses and psychology tied over a lot and he mentioned that “the study of humans is the most applicable on a daily basis”. Other than that, his preparedness came from a lot of real life experiences. He learned to be diplomatic and a people person, understanding mechanics for communications. Day to day, the agency is always collaborating. Everyone eventually works together but projects start and end with Brian. Toby said said he enjoys his job because it’s being payed to create, in a nutshell, “I draw and make videos for a living”. Brian expressed that he loved his job because of the good people he gets to work with. At one point, they were working in Leonardo Dicaprio’s house. They loved collaborating with people and just getting to know them. The most important practices that Toby and Brian specified were the ability to: show up on time, be hungry to learn and take on anything, to be prepared and ready for anything, to keep learning and producing, to be willing to dedicate yourself, and to be competitive. Brian said that something he looks forward to at his job is working with new changing things, Toby jokes, “going home”. But everyday changes so it’s hard to know what you’re in for. He suggested this job to someone who is creative and enjoys being a problem solver. Someone who who is personable, enjoys people and understanding them, someone detail oriented and organized. Someone with thick skin, for when their ideas are critiqued, and a hunger to learn.
The extent of my interest of this profession goes to the creative aspects, which I really enjoyed and could see myself doing. I don’t know if marketing and advertising is my cup of tea but watching how they brainstormed a new brand and the visuals they drew inspiration from inspired me a lot.
For internship I would love to be able to use my creative skills in an environment I like. The office of Lambesis was very small and homey, and filled with ideas and plants which I felt very welcomed by.
